Umrah with Elderly Parents from Bangladesh: Airline Wheelchair, Haram Mobility & Medical Preparation

Checked 19 October 2026: what a carrier can confirm for an older parent, how a personal wheelchair and powered device are handled, where the Grand Mosque's free wheelchairs and paid electric carts are booked, and which hotel and clinical questions only the property and your doctor can answer. No universal free service, guaranteed gate delivery, step-free hotel route or medical clearance.
This guide is for Bangladeshi families planning Umrah with an older parent or relative who is frail, uses a wheelchair or cannot walk long distances. Use it to separate three decisions that are often mixed together: what the airline can arrange, what the mosque authority publishes about on-site mobility, and what only your clinician, the property and the staff on the day can answer. It is not a medical clearance, a tested booking or an inspected route.
Quick Answer — Checked 19 October 2026: request airline assistance when you book, not at the airport. Biman says the request is mandatory at booking and recommends at least 48 hours; Saudia publishes free wheelchair assistance and free carriage of wheelchairs and up to two mobility items on its own flights, and sets out the WCHR, WCHS and WCHC categories. Inside the Grand Mosque the authority publishes free manual wheelchairs in designated areas and paid electric carts booked through its Tanaqol platform; people with disabilities can use cart service points free of charge. None of that is a personal approval, a free service on every carrier, or a step-free hotel route. [1–9]
1. WHAT CAN THE AIRLINE ARRANGE — AND WHAT DOES THE CODE NOT GUARANTEE? Start with what your parent can actually do, because the category decides the help. Saudia publishes three: WCHR for a passenger who can climb stairs but cannot walk long distances, WCHS for a passenger who cannot manage aircraft stairs but can walk in the cabin, and WCHC for a passenger who cannot walk at all. For WCHC it asks for the passenger's weight and expects an accompanying person seated nearby. Each carrier applies the codes on its own special-assistance form, so describe the need in words as well. [2]
Ask at booking. Biman states that informing it at booking is mandatory, publishes a wheelchair email address and phone line, and recommends making the request at least 48 hours before departure; it also warns that a wheelchair requested only at the airport is subject to availability. Saudia's special-assistance text asks for 48 hours' advance warning for a powered wheelchair and for two pieces of mobility equipment, subject to space and dangerous-goods rules. Treat 48 hours as a floor, not a guarantee: ask the specific carrier whether it needs longer. [1][2][3]
A code in a booking is not a confirmed service at every airport. It has to reach each operating carrier and each station in the itinerary, including a connection. Get the confirmation in writing, keep it with the ticket, and recheck it a few days before departure and again at check-in. Arrive early: Saudia's wheelchair page asks passengers using the service to be at the airport two hours before departure and at the gate before boarding begins. [2]
Step 1: Describe the help your parent needs in plain words. Say whether they can walk to the seat, manage aircraft stairs, or cannot walk at all. Ask the carrier which category it will record and whether it requires a medical form or a companion. [2]
Step 2: Add the request when you book and keep the confirmation. Use the carrier's own booking channel, or its published special-assistance contacts. Capture the reference, the flight segments covered and any charge in writing. [2][3]
Step 3: Check every operating carrier and every airport in the itinerary. A return ticket can involve two carriers and a transit point. Ask each one to confirm the assistance and the handover, including who provides the wheelchair at the transit airport. [2]
Step 4: Reconfirm before departure and arrive early. Call or check the booking before you fly, then present yourselves at the special-assistance desk at check-in. Leave time for the walk, security and the gate. [2]
2. CAN YOU BRING YOUR OWN WHEELCHAIR OR MOBILITY DEVICE? Saudia publishes that wheelchairs and crutches are carried free of charge, and that up to two pieces of mobility equipment, including an electric wheelchair, are accepted in addition to the free checked allowance. It also says these aids are normally carried in the hold, handed over before boarding and returned on arrival according to airport procedures. That is Saudia's published rule for its own flights, not a universal airline entitlement. [1]
The return point is the part families most often get wrong. This review found no basis for promising that the wheelchair comes back at the aircraft door. Depending on the airport and ground handler it may be returned at the gate or on the baggage belt. Ask at check-in where it will be handed over and where it will be returned, and plan the arrival transfer for the slower case. [1]
Powered wheelchairs, batteries, oxygen concentrators and other devices are separate approvals. Saudia, for example, lists approved portable oxygen concentrator models, requires the physician's statement at least 48 hours before departure and check-in at least three hours before, and allows a maximum of two spare batteries in the cabin. Do not assume that every battery type, device or airline is accepted on the same terms. [1]
Your own wheelchair and the airline's airport wheelchair are different services. A personal wheelchair is useful in the hotel and the mosque courtyards, but it does not replace the assistance the airline provides to the gate. The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah says a pilgrim may bring a wheelchair to the Grand Mosque and use it, provided they enter through the places designated for wheelchairs. [4]
3. WHAT MOBILITY HELP IS AVAILABLE INSIDE THE GRAND MOSQUE? The authority publishes a free manual wheelchair service in designated areas; its announcements describe the service as operating around the clock. Its service page names the eastern square at Bab Al-Salam (Gate 19) and the western square at Al-Shubika, and lists a separate paid manual service at the ground Sa'i (Gate 14). The Saudi Press Agency has reported the western gate number differently, so treat printed numbers as a starting point and follow current signs and identified staff. [5][6][8][9]
Electric carts moved to electronic booking. In March 2025 the authority discontinued manual golf-cart booking and required reservations through its transport platform, Tanaqol. The same notice recommends online booking for visitors over 65, keeps service points for those who cannot book, and says people with disabilities can go directly to cart service points free of charge without an online reservation. Arrive on time with your ticket and ID. [6]
Tanaqol is the authority's mobility platform for carts. Nusuk, run by the Ministry, is where Umrah and Rawdah permits are handled; they are different services. Do not assume that a Nusuk permit books a cart, or that a cart booking creates a permit. [4][6][9]
The published 2024 pickup points for electric vehicles were Al-Marwah Gate 25, Al-Arqam Gate 16, Ajyad Gate 5 and Al-Shubika Gate 66. Seating and who may ride or drive are set by the operator, so ask at the service point rather than assuming a companion can ride or steer. [9]
Use the official service points. The authority publishes a licensed wheelchair-assistant function and reported in 2026 that it had trained thousands of wheelchair service providers. Accept help at the counters and from identified staff; decline offers made outside the gates. [5][7]
4. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE A HOTEL AND THE ACTUAL ROUTE? An area name is not an accessibility guarantee. "Near the Haram", "Clock Tower", "Jabal Omar" or "Markazia North" are search labels; none of them proves a step-free door, a working lift or a short walk. The distance from a lobby to the entrance you will actually use, at the time you will walk, is the fact that matters.
Ask the property specific questions and keep the answers in writing: - Which entrance will we use, and is there a step, ramp or kerb at that door? - How wide is the lift, is it working for our dates, and is the room on a low floor near it? - What is the route to the mosque entrance, including crossings, slopes, barriers and any temporary closure? - What is the return route after dark, and where can we wait if the courtyard is crowded? - Does the bathroom have a step, a grab rail or a walk-in shower?
In Madinah, the mosque has many gates and prayer areas. A hotel described as "north" is not automatically the closest to an elderly woman's prayer area or to a Rawdah reporting point. The women's guide owns women's prayer and appointment detail; the hotel and Haramain guide owns the property, station and rail questions. [4]
For the Haramain High-Speed Rail, check the actual station, platform, lift, luggage rules and transfer at both ends; the published rail limits are recorded in the hotel and rail guide. A short rail journey is not automatically easier than a road transfer for a parent who cannot stand for long.
5. WHAT HEALTH PREPARATION BELONGS WITH A CLINICIAN? The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah advises pilgrims to consult a physician before travel to confirm that the health condition is stable and the person is physically able to perform the rituals; to receive required vaccinations well in advance, especially older people and those with chronic disease; to bring an adequate supply of medication; and to carry a medical report listing conditions, medicines and dosages. It also advises diabetic pilgrims to bring their own glucose monitor and to move periodically on long journeys. [4]
That is general pilgrimage guidance, not a fitness certificate for your parent. How much medicine to carry, whether a medicine is controlled in Saudi Arabia, whether a device may be used in the cabin, how insulin must be stored, and whether your parent should travel at all are decisions for the prescriber and the carrier. This page does not give doses, day counts, storage methods or a substitute for travel insurance.
This review did not establish the current 1448H travel-health requirements. The health material inspected elsewhere in this project identifies 1447H/2026. Recheck the Saudi Ministry of Health and your carrier close to travel instead of relying on an old PDF, an agency leaflet or this page.
Carry the medical report and prescriptions in hand luggage, keep medicines in their original packaging where possible, and keep a separate copy with a companion. Ask the clinician and the carrier about any medicine that needs approval, and check Saudi customs rules for controlled medicines before departure. Do not post prescription images or medical records in public chat.
6. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
How do I request a wheelchair for an elderly parent flying from Dhaka?
Request it when you book, or through the carrier's published special-assistance contacts, and choose the category that matches what your parent can do. Biman says the request is mandatory at booking and recommends at least 48 hours; Saudia asks for 48 hours' advance warning for a powered wheelchair. Get written confirmation for every flight and ask about any charge. [2][3]
Can we bring our own wheelchair to Saudi Arabia?
Ask the operating carrier first. Saudia publishes free carriage of wheelchairs and up to two pieces of mobility equipment, including an electric wheelchair, in addition to its free checked allowance. Other carriers set their own terms. The Ministry says a pilgrim may bring a wheelchair to the Grand Mosque and use it through the designated entrances. [1][4]
Will the wheelchair be returned at the aircraft door?
Do not count on it. Saudia says mobility aids are returned on arrival according to airport procedures, which may mean the gate or the baggage belt. Ask at check-in and plan your transfer for the slower case. [1]
Are there free wheelchairs inside the Grand Mosque?
Yes. The authority publishes a free manual wheelchair service in designated areas, and its service page lists the eastern and western squares. Locations and gate numbers can differ between notices, so confirm on the day with identified staff. [5][6]
How do we book an electric cart for Tawaf or Sa'i?
Use the authority's Tanaqol platform. Manual cart booking was discontinued in March 2025, and the authority recommends online booking for visitors over 65 while keeping service points for those who cannot book. People with disabilities may go directly to cart service points free of charge. Take your ticket and ID. [6][9]
Can a family member ride with the elderly parent on the cart?
Ask at the service point or in the booking. Seating and who may ride or drive are set by the operator, and this page found no basis for promising a free companion seat or that a relative may steer. [9]
What medical documents should an elderly parent carry?
The Ministry advises carrying an adequate supply of medication and a medical report listing conditions, medicines and dosages, and diabetic pilgrims should bring a glucose monitor. The quantity, approvals and storage method must come from your clinician and carrier. [4]
